Building a prototype writing assistant using Artificial Intelligence

Transforming post-production techniques with a little help from Generative AI

To demonstrate the potential applications of the ChatGPT platform, we developed a proprietary Google Chrome extension that writes for you.

There’s no doubt that the world is changing before our eyes. And whilst some people are of the view that it’s time to hide under the couch and wait patiently for the killer robots, we believe that the growth of AI can have a massively positive impact on our working life. To underline this potential, we built “Electrify Your Text,” a digital assistant designed to simplify the act of writing and streamline day-to-day work.

Our process

We wanted to show that AI could increase productivity for businesses by reducing the time spent on functional tasks. So, we started by compiling a list of the most common daily tasks that kept people in our agency busy. Then, we set out to convert these tasks into a list of predefined options which would allow a user to quickly and easily generate a suitable text response that aligns with their desired category, tone and messaging. All by using ChatGPT’s advanced AI language models.

The user experience

Users started by installing the “Electrify Your Text” extension on their Google Chrome toolbar. Once the extension was open, they could then select the type of content they wanted help with. Some of the most common options included “writing or replying to an email,” “creating a new brief,” “translating a text,” “writing an article,” and “creating a social media post.”

After they had chosen their preferred content option, users were asked to provide additional information on things like tone and desired messaging, to make the response as accurate as possible. All of this information was then synthesised into a specific text prompt which was automatically sent to ChatGPT and, within seconds, the user would receive their generated text.

Sound easy? Well, let’s take a look at an example.

Dear Brian, thank you for your time the other day…

Ah the classic follow-up email. “Dear so-and-so, what a pleasure to have x or y, please can we now have money for a new project/praise for our work/another meeting to tell you more about why we’re awesome.”

But since they are as necessary as they are time-consuming, we set our extension to work on generating the perfect response in record time. Here’s what the process looks like:

  • You open the extension and select the ‘write an email’ option.
  • The program then asks you to specify the type of content you want in the email. You select ‘follow-up with a client,’ and write a short description of the subject e.g. “I would like to schedule a meeting to show you the progress of our products.”
  • Now, it’s time to choose some of the key characteristics of the message. Do you want it to be long or short? Do you want it to be formal or informal? Emotive or restrained? Clear or flowery? You can even tell the program to automatically include a blurb about your company or highlight some of your most impressive projects. And that’s it, you’re done!
  • At a click of a button, all of this information is instantly translated into a clear text prompt and sent off to ChatGPT to generate a suitable response.

Our vision for AI

In its current form, “Electrify Your Text” is a compelling example for the way in which AI can free up teams so that their time is spent on things that have the most impact. But for us, it also speaks to the way in which we want to see an AI-influenced world develop, because we believe that tools like this can lead to greater, not less, individuality.

The secret lies in customization.

By creating a user dashboard for our program as part of the next phase of development, we can allow our staff to have a much greater degree of input into the content creation process, allowing them to tailor these automatically generated texts not just to their specific aims, but even to their specific tone of voice. So, instead of detaching the human from the content, we instead reinforce their value.
